NORTHWOOD, England, Nov. 25 (UPI) -- British actress Dinah Sheridan, who appeared in classic British films including "The Railway Children" and "Genevieve," died Sunday at the age of 92.

Sheridan passed away at her home in Middlesex, surrounded by her family, the BBC reported.

The actress was born Dinah Mec to a German mother and Russian father in 1920. She said she picked the name Sheridan out of a phone book.

Sheridan started acting when she was a teenager, landing her first role when she was 15. She put her acting career on hold to become an ambulance driver at the start of World War II.

Sheridan went on to appear in a number of films and television, including the BBC sitcoms "Don't Wait Up" and "All Night Long".

She was married four times and had three children.
