Gary Glitter arrested in Savile case

LONDON, Oct. 28 (UPI) -- Police in London have arrested pop star Gary Glitter on suspicion of sex offenses related to the Jimmy Savile sex abuse scandal, the BBC reported.

Officers confirmed they "arrested a man in his 60s in connection with the investigation," though declined to identify the man, the BBC said Sunday.

"The man, from London, was arrested at approximately 7:15 BST on suspicion of sexual offenses. The individual falls under the strand of the investigation we have termed 'Savile and others,'" a statement from the London Metropolitan Police Service said.

Glitter, whose real name is Paul Gadd, was jailed in 2006 in Vietnam for child sex offenses.

Scotland Yard has interviewed more than 130 people -- many of whom allege abuse, from inappropriate touching to rape, at the hands of Savile -- and are following 400 lines of inquiry. Investigators suspect Savile sexually abused about 300 young people over the course of four decades.

Savile -- who died Oct. 29, 2011, at age 84 -- was "undoubtedly" one of the most prolific sex offenders in recent British history who was "hiding in plain sight," said Cmdr. Peter Spindler, who's heading the investigation.

Savile, a bachelor, spent 20 years hosting the BBC-TV's long-running "Top of the Pops" music chart show and another 20 years presenting "Jim'll Fix It," in which he helped the wishes of viewers, mainly children, come true.

Spindler said a number of "living people" are being investigated in relation to the Savile case.
