'Madagascar 3' wins weekend box office

LOS ANGELES, June 10 (UPI) -- "Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted," the third installment in the adventures of escaped New York zoo animals, was No. 1 at the U.S. box office.

The animated sequel took in $60.3 million in its first weekend at theatres, followed by the lavish sci-fi flick "Prometheus" with $50 million.

"Snow White and the Huntsman," starring Charlize Theron, fell to the third spot with $23 million.

"Men in Black 3," starring Will Smith, earned $13.5 million for fourth place.

All studio estimates of gross box office receipts are via Box Office Mojo.

"Marvel's The Avengers" was No. 5 with $10.8 million; "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel" sixth with $3.2 million; "What to Expect When You're Expecting" seventh with $2.7 million; "Battleship" eighth with $2.28 million; and "The Dictator" ninth with $2.15 million.

"Moonrise Kingdom" rounded out the top 10 with $1.57 million.

McConaughey, Alves wed

AUSTIN, Texas, June 10 (UPI) -- Actor Matthew McConaughey married his longtime girlfriend, Camila Alves, at their home in Austin, Texas, Saturday night, E! News reported.

The entertainment news Web site described it as an intimate ceremony that came the day after a pre-wedding party.

E! News said several dozen guests had spent the night camping out in air-conditioned tents.

There also was a large white tent set up and a truck delivered orchids, E! News said.

McConaughey, 42, whose movie credits include 2009's "Ghosts of Girlfriends Past" and 2008's "Tropic Thunder," and Alves, a 30-year-old former model from Brazil who is now a handbag designer and TV host, met in 2007. They have two children together, Levi, nearly 4, and Vida, 2.

Nolan: No fourth Batman movie

CULVER CITY, Calif., June 10 (UPI) -- Christopher Nolan will not direct a fourth Batman movie, the filmmaker said at a Producers Guild of America conference at Sony Studios in California.

The director said he always envisioned his Batman story as a trilogy: "Batman Begins," "The Dark Knight" and "The Dark Knight Rises," which is scheduled to open July 20, Variety reported Saturday.

"I don't want to hold anything back," he said at the conference, at which he was on the opening panel.

Nolan said he was inspired by Richard Donner's "Superman" to create a new Batman story separate from the comic book stories.

"I explained the potential of what was exciting to me," he said. "There really had not been an origin story about this extraordinary figure in an ordinary world."

'X Factor' judges walk out of auditions

KANSAS CITY, Mo., June 10 (UPI) -- The four judges of reality show "The X Factor" walked out of Missouri auditions when a contestant refused to face them as he sang, audience members said.

Britney Spears, Demi Lovato, L.A. Reid and Louis Walsh -- who was filling in for a sick Simon Cowell -- all got up and left the Saturday audition at the Sprint Center in Kansas City after the contestant remained facing away from the judges as he sang, People magazine reported.

"It was really awkward," an audience member said. "You could tell the judges were done."

The contestant, not noticing the departure, continued to sing after the judges left the building, People reported.

"He was one of the worst singers and had a bad attitude ... [The judges] all hated it and walked off," another audience member said.

Lovato, Reid and Walsh returned to judge the final contestant, though Spears did not return until a second show taping.
