LOS ANGELES, May 12 (UPI) -- TNT says it has ordered a police docu-series called "Boston Blue" from executive producer Donnie Wahlberg and plans to air it next year.

The show follows the men and women of the Boston Police Department's gang unit.

Wahlberg, a Boston native, stars on the CBS police drama "Blue Bloods."

TNT said it also is working on the competition series "72 Hours" by the executive producer of "Extreme Makeover" and "The Moment of Truth."

The new show drops competing teams from a helicopter into the wilderness. The competitors are given three days and a GPS tracking device to find a hidden suitcase full of cash.

The cable network said it has ordered eight episodes each of "Boston Blue" and "72 Hours." They are both to premiere in 2013.

"'Boston Blue' and '72 Hours' are excellent fits for two of TNT's most important audience segments," Michael Wright, president and head of programming for TNT, TBS and Turner Classic Movies, said in a statement.

"With 'Boston Blue,' we're looking to grab viewers who come to TNT for such blockbuster originals as 'The Closer' and 'Rizzoli & Isles.' And with '72 Hours,' we're going after fans of TNT's action-packed dramas, like 'Falling Skies' and 'Leverage.' We're very excited about moving further into the realm of unscripted dramas with these outstanding additions to the TNT lineup."
