CHATSWORTH, Calif., April 14 (UPI) -- "Glee" star Chris Colfer has adopted an older cat named Brian from a California animal shelter, the actor said on Twitter.

"I adopted a cat today from the West Valley Animal Shelter!" Colfer Tweeted on Wednesday. "His name is Brian, he's 8 years old and 20 pounds!"

Colfer adopted the declawed brown tabby from a Chatsworth animal shelter where he went mostly unrecognized with a female friend.

"He was very nice," animal care technician Jesse Franco told People magazine. "Not a lot of people adopt older cats."

Brian had been surrendered in late March by a previous owner, though it took just a few minutes for Colfer to select the animal and sign the paperwork for adoption.

"It's a big cat, but very sweet," Franco says. "I think that's why Chris liked it."

Colfer urged his fans to consider adopting pets from animal shelters.

"It was heartbreaking to see so many sweet animals needing homes," he wrote on Twitter. "Please think about rescuing!"
