NEW YORK, March 22 (UPI) -- The Broadway-themed musical drama "Smash" has been renewed for a second season, Robert Greenblatt, chairman of NBC Entertainment, said Thursday.

The show premiered last month to good ratings and positive reviews.

Produced by Steven Spielberg and starring Debra Messing, Christian Borle, Anjelica Huston, Megan Hilty, Katharine McPhee and Jack Davenport, the show is about the creative team behind a new musical based on the life of Marilyn Monroe and the women competing to play the plum role.
