LOS ANGELES, Feb. 28 (UPI) -- Actress Lucy Liu is to play sidekick to Jonny Lee Miller's Sherlock Holmes in the U.S. television pilot "Elementary," EW.com reported.

The CBS show will follow Holmes and Watson as they solve crimes in modern-day New York.

The first name of Liu's character, whom British Victorian-era author Arthur Conan Doyle initially created as a man, has not been reported.

"Sherlock," a series starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman as contemporary London sleuths Holmes and Watson, has been a huge hit in the United Kingdom on the BBC and in the United States on PBS. A third season is in production.

Liu is best known for her work on TV's "Ally McBeal" and "Southland," as well as the "Charlie's Angels" movies.
