NEW YORK, Dec. 13 (UPI) -- A friend of Katie Couric says the U.S. broadcast journalist has broken up with Brooks Perlin, her boyfriend of five years.

Perlin is the chief financial officer at Eco Supply Center, an ecologically friendly building-materials distributor.

The New York Post quoted an unnamed friend as saying the couple's romance has been strained for months and Perlin is moving out of Couric's Manhattan apartment.

"They have decided to move on. Brooks is a great person and a real gentleman; he and Katie enjoyed their time together. But after five years, they have decided it was time to go their separate ways. Brooks is in the process of moving out of her home," Couric's friend told the Post.

No specific reason was given for the split.

Couric's husband, Jay Monahan, died of colon cancer in 1998.
