WASHINGTON, Oct. 23 (UPI) -- Former CBS News White House correspondent Robert Pierpoint, 86, died of complications from surgery, the network said Sunday.
Pierpoint spent more than 40 years with CBS News covering six presidents and serving as White House reporter from the Eisenhower administration through President Carter.
CBS said in a written statement Pierpoint broke in covering the Korean War and was part of such major stories as Watergate, the Kennedy assassination and the Iranian hostage crisis.
CBS correspondent Bob Schieffer called Pierpoint a master at developing sources. "As an avid tennis player he got many of his stories on the court," Schieffer said.
Schieffer said one famous incident saw Pierpoint rush from a tennis match to the White House lawn still wearing shorts to get a breaking scoop on the air.
