LOS ANGELES, Oct. 4 (UPI) -- NBC said Tuesday it has canceled "The Playboy Club," a drama series that premiered on the U.S. broadcast network Sept. 20.

The Hollywood Reporter said low ratings were to blame for the quick demise of the series, which was set in 1960s Chicago and starred Amber Heard and Eddie Cibrian.

Re-runs of "Prime Suspect" are expected to air in "Playboy's" time slot until Oct. 31 when Brian Williams' news magazine show, "Rock Center," will permanently take its place, The Hollywood Reporter said.

The Parents Television Council had called for a boycott of the series and urged sponsors not to advertise during episodes of it because it said the show objectified women.
