LOS ANGELES, Sept. 1 (UPI) -- U.S. cable network Showtime says it has renewed its comedy series "The Big C" for a third season.

Laura Linney stars in the show as a reserved, suburban wife/mother/teacher whose terminal cancer diagnosis forces her to shake up her life.

Season 2 is due to wrap up Sept. 26. By the season finale, Alan Alda, Parker Posey, Gabourey Sidibe, Cynthia Nixon and Hugh Dancy will have appeared as guest stars.

Showtime said production will begin on 10 new episodes starting early next year for premiere in the second quarter of 2012.

The series co-stars Oliver Platt, Gabriel Basso and John Benjamin Hickey.
