NEW YORK, July 15 (UPI) -- Jimmy Whittemore, the out-of-work actor who trashed the New York theater where "Late Show with David Letterman" is taped, has apologized for his actions.

Whittemore, 22, was arrested this week for smashing glass doors and urinating in the lobby of the Ed Sullivan Theater during a drunken rampage. He was charged with burglary and criminal mischief and released on $6,000 bail.

"Inside Edition" said it interviewed him while he was doing yard work at home in Enfield, Conn.

Mike Reilly, the uncle who raised him, was with Whittemore and said the yard work was intended to help pay back the bail money Reilly posted for him.

"I was very disappointed. I never thought he'd do anything like this in a million years," Reilly told "Inside Edition."

Whittemore told the program he was so drunk he doesn't even remember the incident.

Asked if he has a drinking problem," Whittemore replied: "I didn't think I did beforehand. … Of course, if you black out and don't remember what happened, that's a definite wake-up call!"

Whittemore said he's embarrassed by the incident and wants Letterman to know: "I'm sorry. I really am. I'm sorry."

Whittemore was the subject one of Letterman's infamous Top 10 lists this week.
