LOS ANGELES, June 29 (UPI) -- Canadian-born comedian Martin Short has joined the cast of the U.S. sitcom "How I Met Your Mother?" a show representative confirmed.

TVGuide.com said Short is to replace Dave Foley, whose character was introduced at the end of last season, because Foley is no longer available.

Foley will be starring on his own series "How to Be a Gentleman" next season.

Short is known for his work in the films "Innerspace," "Three Amigos" and "Father of the Bride," as well as on the TV shows "Saturday Night Live," "Damages" and "Weeds."
