NEW YORK, June 26 (UPI) -- Actor Neil Patrick Harris says he and his longtime partner are planning to get married now that New York State has legalized gay marriage.
Harris sent out celebratory Tweets as soon as the state Senate passed the bill late Friday, People magazine reported. The next day he was talking about David Burtka, his partner.
"David and I did propose to each other, but over five years ago!" Harris said. "We've been wearing engagement rings for ages, waiting for an available date."
The couple are the parents of 8-month-old twins, born to a surrogate mother.
Harris, who turned 38 earlier this month, first became known as a teenager playing a very young doctor in the TV series "Doogie Howser M.D." He has had a busy career in television and movies and as a Tony Award-winning stage actor.
