LOS ANGELES, June 1 (UPI) -- Patrick Dempsey was discussing his contract, not his role on the U.S. TV show "Grey's Anatomy," when he said next season was his last, his publicist said.

The actor's publicist released a statement to Entertainment Weekly that indicated comments made during an interview with the Italian edition of Vanity Fair were taken out of context.

"It will be my last," Dempsey said during the Vanity Fair interview. "I don't know what will happen with the other characters, but for me, it's done."

"He was referring to the fact that his contract is up at the end of next season and we have no idea what the future holds," Dempsey's publicist said in a statement Entertainment Weekly published Wednesday.
