'Simpsons' Duff sells well as a cerveza

MIAMI, May 29 (UPI) -- A Chilean brewer says sales of his Duff beer in Latin America have been brisk as it catches the eyes of two generations of "Simpsons" fans.

Enrique Robles told the El Mercurio newspaper the venerable animated Fox series has a large fan base in Latin America and a lot of people are happy to try the preferred brew of Homer Simpson and his cartoon drinking buddies.

"In Colombia, the Simpsons are legendary and nobody can believe that the beer really exists," Robles said. "Everyone wants to try Homer's beer."

The Miami Herald said Sunday that while Duff's television image is a blue-collar, mass-produced line of suds, the real-life Duff often commands the same prices as an upscale import.

"I'm not going to tell you that this is the best beer in the world, but it sells very well," said Reynaldo Roman, manager of a restaurant in Medellin. "When people see it they have to buy it."

The Herald noted that Duff likely won't be finding a spot at U.S. saloons and liquor stores any time soon. Fox and "Simpsons" creator Matt Groening have so far declined to license the name in the United States.
