NEW YORK, May 24 (UPI) -- The U.S. cable network Nickelodeon says it has ordered a third season of its live-action comedy series "Big Time Rush."

The announcement was made Tuesday by Marjorie Cohn, Nickelodeon's president of development and original programming.

Created by Scott Fellows and produced in partnership with Sony Music, the show chronicles the adventures of four best friends from Minnesota who move to Los Angeles and trade in their hockey sticks and parkas for a chance at music stardom, Nickelodeon said in a synopsis.

Starring Kendall Schmidt, James Maslow, Carlos Pena and Logan Henderson, the new season of "Big Time Rush" will commence production on 20 episodes in January 2012, the network said.

"'Big Time Rush's' success both on- and off-screen is a true testament to the chemistry between the boys," Cohn said in a statement. "Kendall, James, Carlos and Logan have connected with fans around the world and we are excited to bring even more music and comedic adventures to our audience."
