NEW YORK, May 12 (UPI) -- Mary Tyler Moore's publicist says the U.S. actress had surgery Thursday to remove a benign tumor from the protective lining around her brain.

Moore, 74, is best known for her work on the classic television sitcoms "The Dick van Dyke Show" and "The Mary Tyler Moore Show."

"Mary went in for an elective surgery that her doctor recommended while she's healthy," the actress' spokeswoman, Alla Plotkin, told ABC News.

Moore, who was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes when she was 33, is the chairwoman of Juvenile Diabetes Research International.
