LONDON, Jan. 18 (UPI) -- A second season of the British drama series "Downton Abbey" and a Christmas-themed special are in the works, the BBC said.

Starring Maggie Smith, Hugh Bonneville and Penelope Wilton, the show is set in an English country house in the early 20th century. Julian Fellowes penned the show about an aristocratic family and the staff that serves them.

The BBC said a "Downton" Christmas special is set for broadcast on ITV in December and will pick up where the second season ends. Season 2 is to air in the United Kingdom next fall.

Season 1 of the program is currently running on PBS stations in the United States.

"Julian has come up with a fantastic story that will give audiences the chance to enjoy the experience of the festive experience at Downton Abbey," the BBC quoted Laura Mackie, ITV's director of drama, as saying Monday.

Fellowes won the Oscar for original screenplay in 2001 for "Gosford Park."
