Ted Williams appeared Wednesday on the "Dr. Phil" show. Host Philip McGraw, who holds a doctorate in clinical psychology, later issued a press release saying Williams had agreed to treatment for alcohol abuse, the Los Angeles Times reported.
"If Ted is ever going to get better, he's got to be honest with himself and admit he's addicted to drugs and alcohol," McGraw said in a statement. "I've told him it's not going to be easy and it's going to take a lot of hard work. It might be a long journey for him, but this is a big step in the right direction."
Williams became a national sensation after The Columbus (Ohio) Dispatch did a story on him. He was plucked off the streets, flown to New York and Los Angeles and offered voice-over jobs.
On Monday, police in Los Angeles responded after Williams and his daughter allegedly got involved in a physical confrontation at the Renaissance Hollywood Hotel. No charges have been filed.
