NEW YORK, Dec. 8 (UPI) -- U.S. cable network Syfy says it has ordered an action-adventure series called "Alphas" starring David Strathairn set to debut this summer.

The announcement was made Wednesday by Mark Stern, Syfy's executive vice president of original content and co-head of original content for Universal Cable Productions.

The show is written by Zak Penn and Michael Karnow, and its executive producers are Gail Berman, Lloyd Braun and Gene Stein for BermanBraun, as well as Zak Penn.

The cast also includes Warren Christie, Malik Yoba, Laura Mennell, Ryan Cartwright and Azita Ghanizada. Callum Keith Rennie is to guest star in the pilot.

Eleven episodes have been ordered in addition to the 90-minute pilot directed by Jack Bender, director and executive producer of "Lost," Syfy said.

"With each step in the development and production of 'Alphas,' we knew we were onto something very exciting," Stern said in a statement Wednesday. "Under Gail and Lloyd's leadership, Zak and Michael created a smart, fast-paced script that attracted an amazing director in Jack Bender and an incredible cast. We couldn't be happier to see this first-rate project come to fruition as a Syfy series."
