Osbourne slams Marie Claire 'Fatties' blog

LOS ANGELES, Oct. 27 (UPI) -- British television personality Sharon Osbourne says she is outraged by a Marie Claire blog post about overweight people showing affection.

Julie Chen, Osbourne's co-host on "The Talk," read an excerpt from Maura Kelly's blog post titled, "Should 'Fatties' Get a Room? (Even on TV?)" during Wednesday's edition of the talk show.

"This woman is a discredit to other women. ... I am now canceling my subscription to the magazine," Osbourne said on-air. "I am so close to tears. If this woman was here I'd tell you she would get such a mouthful from me. People like this are adding to the problem that we have today with our kids, boys and girls, about being anorexic, having low self-esteem. How dare she. I'm 30 pounds overweight right now. Should I not be allowed to kiss my husband? Or my children or walk across a room? This is no better than Nazi Germany saying that everybody should be tall, slim, blonde with blue eyes. And that's the way I feel. How dare they."

The Hollywood Reporter said Marie Claire received 28,000 e-mails after a formerly anorexic writer blogged about how she wouldn't watch the new sitcom "Mike & Molly" because it shows "two characters with rolls and rolls of fat kissing each other."

Marie Claire Editor in Chief Joanna Coles has since apologized for the blog, the trade newspaper said.

"Maura Kelly is a very provocative blogger," Coles told Fashionista.com Wednesday. "She was an anorexic herself and this is a subject she feels very strongly about."

Kelly also updated her blog with an apology stating: "Believe it or not, I never wanted anyone to feel bullied or ashamed after reading this, and I sorely regret that it upset people so much. A lot of what I said was unnecessary; it wasn't productive, either," The Hollywood Reporter said.
