LOS ANGELES, Colo., Oct. 26 (UPI) -- FX says it has ordered a U.S. version of the Australian series "Wilfred" that will star Elijah Wood and Jason Gann, and debut next summer.

TVGuide.com said Wood will play Ryan, an introvert trying to find happiness by inventing an imaginary friend named Wilfred, who looks like a man in a dog suit to Ryan and like a real canine to the rest of the world.

Gann, who co-created and starred in the original series, will play Wilfred in the American version, the report said.

"We loved how well the pilot turned out, and we were blown away by the chemistry between Elijah Wood and Jason Gann," TVGuide.com quoted FX Executive Vice President of Original Programming Nick Grad as saying. "It's a very unique concept and we think David Zuckerman has a great take on it."
