BURBANK, Calif., July 8 (UPI) -- Jason Segel, an actor and confirmed minister with the Universal Life Church, officiated a wedding on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno," NBC said.

The on-air ceremony took place Tuesday. The star of the new film "Despicable Me" was approached by Abbe Thorner and Jason Wood at his local bar after they taped flyers to trees around his neighborhood asking, "Jason Segel will you marry us?"

"They turned out to be the nicest, most normal, fun-loving couple ever," Segel said on the show. "I guess the guys who were supposed to officiate their wedding dropped out and they were watching 'Sarah Marshall' at the time -- which I mean most people are -- so they convinced me that I would be an appropriate person to officiate their wedding and I told them I was out of town for their actual day. But then I asked them, thank you to you and 'The Tonight Show,' if they would like to be married here tonight and so they're here."

When Leno asked if he needed some sort of documents to make this ceremony legal, Segel replied, "I'm glad you asked, because as of Friday, I'm a minister in the Universal Life Church."

Family members of the bride and groom were in the audience and Leno served as the official witness.

Both Segel and Leno signed the marriage license after the show, NBC said in a news release.
