'Dr. Death' television documentary to air

DETROIT, June 27 (UPI) -- A 90-minute documentary about the art, inventions and life outside of work for Jack Kevorkian, the man known as "Dr. Death" will air Monday, officials say.

The film focuses on Kevorkian, the man inside and outside of medicine, with allegedly new insight into the doctor who helped, by his own count, 130 people end their own lives, the Detroit Free Press reported Sunday.

The documentary reveals Kevorkian the film producer who spent much of his own money on a version of Handel's "Messiah."

"That was a mistake, a giant one ... it was lousy," Kevorkian said of the project. "Don't do anything that takes a lot of money and other people."

There is also insight into Kevorkian feelings toward his mother, who died a painful death of bone cancer, and his resultant effort to write a sonata, the newspaper said.

The documentary shows his paintings, books, medical papers and inventions, specifically the so-called "suicide machine" allowing people to give themselves a lethal injection, the Free Press reported.

Finally, the documentary features the "60 Minutes" segment showing Kevorkian administering the lethal injection to an ALS patient, an act that sent him to prison for 8 1/2 years.

"No change happens without somebody going to prison," Kevorkian said.
