LOS ANGELES, April 13 (UPI) -- Chace Crawford's publicist says the U.S. television actor has decided not to star in the musical remake of the classic 1984 movie "Footloose" as planned.

Best known for his work on TV's "Gossip Girl," Crawford stepped in to play the male lead in "Footloose" after "High School Musical" star Zac Efron backed out. Kevin Bacon starred in the original movie.

Although sources told EW.com the starring role in the remake is now expected to go to an unknown actor, Paramount declined to comment on the Web site's story.

Former "Dancing With the Stars" professional dancer Julianne Hough is still attached to play the lead character's love interest. Lori Singer portrayed the part in the 1984 flick.
