LOS ANGELES, April 6 (UPI) -- Former astronaut Buzz Aldrin has become the second celebrity booted from the current season of the U.S. competition series "Dancing with the Stars."

Actress Shannen Doherty last week was the first competitor voted off of Season 10 of the show.

"I did this show for the fighter pilots out there, the military people and the elder geezers like me who would just like to see an elder come back week after week," Aldrin, 80, said Tuesday night upon learning he and his professional dance partner, Ashly DelGrosso, were eliminated from the competition. "But I'm interested also in having the public be thankful for the great successes we had in the Apollo program and look forward to even greater successes in our future space program. That's why I came onboard to take the challenge and take the risk and I thank everyone who voted for us."
