'Doctor' prompts interest in Harris Tweed

LONDON, March 27 (UPI) -- "Doctor Who" has boosted interest in the luxury material Harris Tweed thanks to pictures of the British TV series' new star, an industry official says.

Lorna Macaulay of the Harris Tweed Authority said since pictures of new "Doctor" star Matt Smith wearing a Harris Tweed jacket surfaced online, interest in the heavy woolen material has increased dramatically, The Times of London said Saturday.

"They could see it was Harris Tweed, so they wanted to find out what particular sort it is, and how to get a jacket like it for themselves," Macaulay said of interested "Doctor" fans.

Macaulay said the jacket worn by Smith, who plays the newest incarnation of the Doctor on the BBC series, was identified as a Mackenzie "two by two" dogtooth. She told The Times that reproductions of the "Doctor" jacket are possible.

"We have the ability to replicate it and would be keen to satisfy the 'Doctor Who' fans and produce a tweed that's as close as possible to the original," Macaulay said.
