LOS ANGELES, March 26 (UPI) -- Fox announced Friday the eighth season of its U.S. thriller series "24" will be its last.

USA Today said high costs and low ratings were to blame for the decision to scrap the iconic Kiefer Sutherland series after this season ends.

The show's executive producer, Howard Gordon, said the cast and crew agreed the time was right to end it since the show's real-time format -- in which each episode of a season represents an hour in the same day -- had become restrictive.

"We've really had what feels like our last day," the newspaper quoted Gordon as saying.

A two-hour series finale is expected to air May 24.
