Walter Koenig says son 'took his own life'

VANCOUVER, British Columbia, Feb. 25 (UPI) -- A body found Thursday in Vancouver, British Columbia's Stanley Park is that of missing actor Andrew Koenig, his father said.

Koenig, who lived in Vancouver from 1989 to 1992, arrived in the Pacific Northwest city Feb. 10 to visit friends and had not been seen since Feb. 14. He was booked on a Feb. 16 return flight to California, but he never boarded the plane, The Vancouver Sun reported.

Koenig, most famous for his role as Richard "Boner" Stabone in the '80s TV comedy "Growing Pains," had a history of depression and had stopped taking his medication about a year ago, his father, actor Walter Koenig, told CNN.

Walter Koenig told a news conference in Vancouver Thursday the body had been identified as that of his son, the Los Angeles Times reported.

"My son took his own life," Walter Koenig told reporters at a news conference.

Walter Koenig and his wife Judy joined several of their son's friends Thursday in a search for Andrew Koenig, splitting into two teams. One of the teams found the body, the Times said.

The family discovered in recent days that Koenig had sold most of his belongings and moved out of his Venice, Calif., apartment before boarding his flight to Canada.
