Cheryl and Ashley Cole split up

LONDON, Feb. 24 (UPI) -- Cheryl Cole's publicist confirmed the British pop star has separated from her soccer player husband Ashley Cole.

The couple have been married for four years.

"Cheryl asks the media to respect her privacy during this difficult time," her spokesman said in a statement issued to the BBC.

Cheryl is a member of the pop group Girls Aloud and is a judge on the TV talent show "The X Factor."

Ashley plays for the England and Chelsea soccer teams.
