Emmy Awards may be aired live nationwide

LOS ANGELES, Feb. 6 (UPI) -- Sources say NBC executives are considering airing the 62nd Annual Primetime Emmy Awards live across the United States this year.

Broadcasting and Cable said Friday the proposed plan for the Aug. 29 Emmy Awards ceremony is similar to the format NBC used when the TV network aired the Golden Globe Awards live nationwide on Jan. 17.

The Golden Globe Awards enjoyed a 14 percent increase in its numbers of viewers this year, marking a total of 17 million viewers.

This year's Grammy Awards ceremony, which was not aired live nationwide, also enjoyed a ratings boost. The music industry event drew in an average of 25.8 million viewers, a 35 percent increase from last year's show.

Previous incarnations of the Emmy Awards ceremony were aired live in the Eastern Standard and Central time zones. Yet a tape-delayed basis was used to air those ceremonies in the country's Western time zones.

Representatives for both NBC and the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences had no comment regarding a possible live Emmy broadcast.
