CHICAGO, Feb. 1 (UPI) -- Media titan Oprah Winfrey has adopted a pair of 14-week-old Springer Spaniel puppies, a Chicago animal shelter confirmed.
The Chicago Tribune said canine sisters Sunny and Lauren appeared on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" Friday.
"What's really wonderful about Oprah adopting is that she educates the world and the message is to go to a shelter,'' Paula Fasseas, founder and chair of PAWS -- a shelter based in Chicago -- told the newspaper. "She's really directed so much attention to this terrible problem we have with homeless pets.''
Winfrey said on her Web site the adoptions coincided with her 56th birthday Friday.
"I did decide, though, to get myself a little birthday gift this year. Actually, I thought I'd get myself two," she said. "They just arrived in time for my birthday."
