LOS ANGELES, Dec. 31 (UPI) -- Fox-owned channels could go dark on Time Warner cable systems in nine markets, including New York and Los Angeles, if a new deal is not struck.

Fox and Time Warner Cable remained in talks as Thursday's midnight deadline for the expiration of current contracts drew closer, Daily Variety and other media sources reported.

Fox reportedly is demanding a monthly payment of $1 per Time Warner subscriber for the retransmission consent rights to 14 of its stations in markets served by the cable company.

Time Warner said it has come back with an offer of about 30 cents a subscriber per month.

One source close to the negotiations told Variety a new pact probably won't be cut until the two sides are down to the wire Thursday.

"Why would you blink until you have to?" the insider asked.
