NEW YORK, Dec. 7 (UPI) -- The "Today" show is to air live from Afghanistan this week, NBC announced Monday.

Matt Lauer and Al Roker are to anchor two special broadcasts from Kabul Tuesday and Wednesday.

"Lauer and Roker will have the latest reporting from the war zone, spending time on the ground -- and in the air -- with American troops," the network said in a release. "At a crucial point in the Afghan campaign, 'Today' will be live at the heart of the story."

Lauer and Roker' trip to Afghanistan follows U.S. President Barack Obama's landmark announcement that he's sending 30,000 more troops to the war zone, NBC noted.

"Today" co-hosts Meredith Vieira and Ann Curry are to appear live from the program's home at Studio 1A in New York Tuesday and Wednesday.
