NEW YORK, Dec. 2 (UPI) -- John Legend has opened up about his recently released album Darkness and Light and how it addresses thoughts of America's future following the presidential election.

"[Producer] Blake [Mills] and I talked about a gap between what I do outside of music, when it comes to politics and philanthropy, and then my actual music, where most of it is about relationships," the singer said to Entertainment Weekly Friday, the same day Darkness and Light arrives in stores.

"A lot of the album still is [about relationships], but I wanted to show an entire person—not just the person in love but also someone who's thinking about the world," he continued before noting how he dealt with Hillary Clinton losing the election, a candidate he supported.

"Comedy was therapeutic. When we were thinking about when my album was going to come out, we had no expectation that we'd be reacting to a Donald Trump presidency. Now that it's the case, I feel like this album could help people heal a little bit after some tough times," Legend said.

The 12-track release is Legend's fifth studio album and features collaborations with Chance the Rapper, Miguel and Alabama Shakes frontwoman Brittany Howard.

Legend also appeared on Good Morning America Friday where he discussed the album, performed its lead single "Love Me Now" and talked about his role in upcoming musical La La Land alongside Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone.

"I was kinda jealous of how fast he [Gosling] learned to be awesome at piano. I was playing since I was four, it's not fair," Legend joked.

"He's so good at preparing for these roles and he's so focused and man I just feel lucky be in a cast with Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling," he continued.
