NEW YORK, May 19 (UPI) -- Taye Diggs is to return to Broadway this summer in Hedwig and the Angry Inch, the 2014 Tony Award winner for Best Musical Revival, producers announced.

Diggs will play the title role in the show for a limited, 12-week engagement starting July 22 at the Belasco Theatre. As previously announced, Darren Criss will play his final performance as Hedwig on July 19. Hedwig will mark Diggs' first New York stage role since the 2005 revival of A Soldier's Play. His other stage credits include Carousel, Rent, Wicked, Chicago and The Wild Party. The Private Practice alum is also in production for the second season of the small-screen crime drama Murder in the First, which will premiere June 8 on TNT. "'Internationally ignored song stylist' Hedwig Robinson brings her fourth-wall-smashing rock 'n' roll saga to New York to set the record straight about her life, her loves, and the botched operation that left her with that 'angry inch,'" press notes said.
