One Direction, Katy Perry, Iggy Azalea, Beyonce win big at the American Music Awards

One Direction scored the event's top prize of Artist of the Year, as well as the honors for Favorite Band, Duo or Group and Favorite Pop/Rock Album.

LOS ANGELES, Nov. 24 (UPI) -- The British-Irish boy band One Direction was the big winner at the American Music Awards ceremony in Los Angeles Sunday night.

The musicians took home the event's top prize of Artist of the Year, as well as the honors for Favorite Band, Duo or Group and Favorite Pop/Rock Album for Midnight Memories.

Katy Perry, who was absent from the festivities but offered acceptance speeches via video, won the accolades for Favorite Female Artist in both the Adult Contemporary and Pop/Rock categories. She also scored the prize for Single of the Year for "Dark Horse" featuring Juicy J.

Beyonce earned the award for Favorite Female Artist in the Soul/R&B category and her CD Beyonce was declared the Favorite Soul/R&B album.

Iggy Azalea, who went into the ceremony with a leading six nominations, went home with the trophies for Favorite Rap/Hip-Hop Artist and Favorite Rap/Hip Hop Album for The New Classic.

5 Seconds of Summer accepted the award for Favorite New Artist, while Carrie Underwood and Luke Bryan won the prizes for Favorite Female and Male Country Artist.

Imagine Dragons was named Favorite Alternative Rock Artist, Sam Smith Favorite Male Pop/Rock Artist, Enrique Iglesias Favorite Latin Artist and John Legend Favorite Male Soul/R&B Artist.

Pitbull hosted and sang on the ABC telecast, which also featured performances by One Direction, Selena Gomez, Imagine Dragons, Iggy Azalea, Jennifer Lopez, Wyclef Jean, Fergie, Lorde, Taylor Swift and Garth Brooks.
