CHICAGO, Sept. 17 (UPI) -- David Bowie Day will take place September 23 in Chicago.

Chicago mayor Rahm Emanuel chose the date to coincide with the opening of the "David Bowie Is..." exhibit at the city's Museum of Contemporary Art. The exhibit celebrates the 67-year-old musician's life and career, and puts handwritten lyrics, original costumes, photography and rare performance material on display.

"[Bowie is] an undisputed global icon," Emanuel declared in an official proclamation. "[His] remarkable half-century career has bridged cultures and faiths while both transcending and fortifying the music, art, fashion & design and theatrical canons."

Bowie has released 24 studio albums, and last debuted The Next Day in 2013. The musician will release new song "Sue (Or in a Season of Crime)" on upcoming compilation album Nothing Has Changed in November.

"David Bowie Is..." opens at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago on September 23, and closes January 4, 2014.
