LOS ANGELES, July 15 (UPI) -- Tool has explained the delays behind the band's new album.
Guitarist Adam Jones and drummer Danny Carey detailed the situation in a recent interview with Rolling Stone. The rock band last released 10,000 Days in 2006, and the musicians say a longstanding lawsuit has delayed their new album.
"The fans are [expletive] at us," Jones says. "And while part of me is selfish and goes, 'I'm not necessarily doing it for them,' it's time that they understand what's going on."
The band has been embroiled in a series of escalating lawsuits that began when a friend sued to claim credit for artwork in 2007. The band was subsequently sued over technicalities in the case by an insurance company they thought would defend them, and the bandmates countersued to protect themselves. The litigation with the insurance company has been unresolved for seven years, and the case goes to court in January.
"The whole thing is really depressing," Carey admits. "The bad thing is it's really time consuming. As we've gotten older and our priorities have changed, it's hard to get the band on a good, solid schedule as it is. ... To throw this into the mix, it makes everything that much worse and stresses people out."
"And it's costing millions and millions of dollars to defend us," Jones adds. "We're going to trial and we want to crush them. But every time we've gotten close to going to trial, it gets postponed and we've wasted money and time and it has just drained our creative energy."
Jones and Carey say the band has been slowly working on new music, and they hope to have "something really solid recorded by the end of the year."
