Ed Sheeran's 'x' earns his first No. 1 album spot on the Billboard 200

The singer released his first studio album "+" in 2011.

NEW YORK, July 2 (UPI) -- Ed Sheeran has earned his first No. 1 album on the Billboard 200.

The 23-year-old singer released x on June 23, his second studio album and a followup to 2011's +. The record is currently atop the Billboard 200, a first for the English singer-songwriter.

In the June 23-29 sales week x sold 210,000 copies, a personal best for Sheeran and the largest pop album debut this year. It is the fourth biggest opening in 2014: Ghost Stories by Coldplay sold 383,000 copies, The Outsiders by Eric Church sold 288,000 and Just As I Am by Brantley Gilbert sold 211,000.

Sheeran embarks on a North American tour August 22 in Seattle, Wash. The tour wraps up September 18 in Toronto, Ontario.
