BATTLE CREEK, Mich., Feb. 6 (UPI) -- The woman charged with stabbing singer Mary J. Blige's father is to undergo a mental examination at the Center for Forensic Psychiatry in Ann Arbor, Mich.

Cheryl White, 50, was charged with assault with intent to murder after she allegedly attacked Thomas Blige, 63, outside his Battle Creek apartment Jan. 23. She is being held on $500,000 bond.

Police said the elder Blige and White had a stormy romantic history and the stabbing apparently occurred when he confronted White for allegedly slashing his car tires.

The Battle Creek Enquirer said Thomas Blige remains at Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo where he is being treated for stab wounds in the neck, arm and side.

White had been scheduled to appear in court Friday for a preliminary hearing in the stabbing case, but her attorney requested an adjournment so she can undergo a mental examination.

The evaluation and a report to the court is expected to take several weeks to complete, the Enquirer said.
