'Strictly Ballroom,' the stage musical, starts rehearsals in Sydney

SYDNEY, Jan. 29 (UPI) -- Aussie director Baz Luhrmann has begun an eight-week intensive rehearsal period at Carriageworks in Sydney for "Strictly Ballroom the Musical," producers said.

Newcomers Thomas Lacey and Phoebe Panaretos will play the lead roles of Scott and Fran in the stage adaptation of Luhrmann's hit 1992 film. The cast will also include Heather Mitchell, Drew Forsythe, Mark Owen-Taylor, Robert Grubb, Bob Baines, Fernando Mira and Natalie Gamsu.

The show about a championship ballroom dancer who defies all the rules to follow his heart will commence previews March 25 with the official world premiere set for April 12 at Sydney's Lyric Theatre.
