'Aladdin' to begin Broadway previews Feb. 26

NEW YORK, Jan. 21 (UPI) -- "Aladdin the Musical" is to begin preview performances on Broadway next month, producers announced.

The stage adaptation of the classic 1992 animated movie is to begin at the New Amsterdam Theatre Feb. 26, with an opening day set for March 20.

Produced by Disney Theatrical Productions, the show features music by Alan Menken and lyrics by Howard Ashman, Tim Rice and Chad Beguelin.

"Aladdin" recently played a limited pre-Broadway engagement at Toronto's Ed Mirvish Theatre.

The musical stars Adam Jacobs in the title role, Courtney Reed as Jasmine and James Monroe Iglehart as Genie. Jonathan Freeman, who lent his voice to Jafar in the movie, plays the character in the stage musical.
