Winds rip off part of opera house roof in Valencia, Spain

VALENCIA, Spain, Dec. 28 (UPI) -- High winds blew off part of the roof of the space helmet-shaped opera house in Valencia, Spain, forcing the cancellation of a Christmas concert, officials said.

The Palau de les Arts Reina Sofia was damaged by 50 mph winds Friday, forcing officials to close the opera venue to visitors and cordon it off.

A special holiday season concert that was to feature 150 Valencia-born musicians was called off, ThinkSpain reported Saturday.

The futuristic Palau de les Arts was designed by Santiago Calatrava and was built in 2005.
