RUTHERFORD, N.J., Sept. 8 (UPI) -- Pop star Bruno Mars will perform at the next Super Bowl halftime show, the NFL announced Sunday.

Mars, a Hawaii native currently on his Moonshine Jungle tour, has sold more than 1 million copies of his sophomore "Unorthodox Jukebox" album.

Mars, who won a Grammy in 2010 for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance on "Just The Way You Are," appeared live Sunday on "Fox NFL Sunday," where the announcement was made prior to the first Sunday game of the 2013-14 NFL season.

In a news release, the NFL said more than 110 million people watched the Super Bowl halftime show in January, featuring Beyonce.

Past halftime show performers have included Michael Jackson, the Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney, Madonna, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Prince, the Who and U2.

Mars has 14 Grammy nominations in all.

Super Bowl XLVIII will be played Feb. 2 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J.
