NASHVILLE, Aug. 8 (UPI) -- Memphis-born country music titan "Cowboy" Jack Clement died of liver cancer Thursday at his home, his close friend Dub Cornett said. He was 82.

"He was the maestro, the ringleader of tomfoolery, and I know Johnny Cash and Sam Phillips are ready to get back to work now that he's in heaven," Cornett told People.com.

He also said the producer, engineer and songwriter was surrounded by family when he died after declining treatment for liver cancer.

Clement is to be inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame next fall.
