The awards, launched in 2003, were started to celebrate the pride, heritage and achievements of African-Americans.

"It is an honor to be recognized alongside these remarkable individuals," said Knight. "By lending a hand to others, we can all help create environments of strength and compassion that enrich our neighborhoods, regardless of who we are or where we live."

Saturday night's event was hosted by actress Taraji P. Henson, and actors Jay Ellis, Omari Hardwick and Robinne Lee, and singers LeToya Luckett and Brandy were on hand to present awards.

Comedian Jonathan Slocumb opened the show and musicians Erica Campbell, Estelle, Angie Stone, Jordin Sparks and Yolanda Adams performed, the release said.
