MARRAKESH, Morocco, June 27 (UPI) -- U.S. pop singer Stevie Wonder will perform a concert in Marrakesh, Morocco, Friday to thank negotiators at a United Nations-backed forum for helping the blind.

Wonder, who is blind and is also a U.N. messenger of peace, last week appealed to more than 600 forum negotiators from 186 countries to finalize a landmark copyright treaty to enhance access to books for millions of people who are blind or visually impaired.

The negotiators announced they had adopted the treaty Thursday.

"This treaty is a victory for the blind, visually impaired and print disabled, but also for the multilateral system," World Intellectual Property Organization Director General Francis Gurry said in a statement.

"With this treaty, the international community has demonstrated the capacity to tackle specific problems, and to agree a consensus solution," Gurry said, adding the accord is balanced and "represents a very good arbitration of the diverse interests of the various stakeholders."
