LOS ANGELES, June 5 (UPI) -- Rock musician Jack White has saved a Michigan Masonic Temple from foreclosure by paying its back taxes totaling $142,000, the Detroit Free Press said.

The Masonic Temple Association said it is renaming the temple's Cathedral Theater -- also known as the Scottish Rite -- the Jack White Theater out of gratitude for the performer's financial assistance, the newspaper said.

"Jack's donation could not have come at a better time and we are eternally grateful to him for it," said Detroit Masonic Temple Association President Roger Sobran. "Jack's magnanimous generosity and unflinching loyalty to this historic building and his Detroit roots is appreciated beyond words."

The 37-year-old singer-songwriter is a Detroit native who has performed on Masonic stages on numerous occasions.
